Veterinary Referral Surgeon

About the Role

Vets Now Manchester is looking for a Diplomate or residency-trained Surgeon to help support and grow its referral surgery caseload. The work spans soft tissue and orthopaedic surgery, with the team also open to candidates who bring strong experience in one area or advanced expertise in a specific discipline.

You’ll be working alongside a multidisciplinary referral team in a specialist-led environment, with a varied referral and emergency caseload that exposes you to complex surgical procedures across multiple disciplines. The hospital is a 24/7 centre providing out-of-hours cover for neighbouring practices, although there is currently no weekend or evening on-call rota for this role.

The position is based at Vets Now Manchester, a small animal referral hospital with services in ECC, internal medicine, soft tissue surgery, orthopaedic surgery, cardiology, and imaging.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage a varied and complex referral caseload across soft tissue and orthopaedic surgery, depending on your expertise.
• Carry out advanced surgical procedures and deliver high standards of patient care.
• Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary referral hospital team.
• Provide clinical advice and support to referring veterinary practices.
• Support colleagues through collaboration and knowledge sharing.
• Contribute to the growth and development of the surgical referral service.
• Supervise surgery residents and rotating interns.

Requirements

• Veterinary degree with RCVS registration.
• Residency-trained, board-certified, or board-eligible status in surgery.
• Advanced clinical experience in soft tissue surgery, orthopaedic surgery, including spinal surgery, or a combination of these disciplines.
• Strong communication skills for working with clients, referring vets, and multidisciplinary teams.
• A collaborative, supportive, and team-focused approach.

It is a 24/7 centre that provides an out-of-hours service for neighbouring practices.

The hospital has a large team of veterinary professionals, including Diplomates and Certificate holders across surgery, ECC, internal medicine, cardiology, and imaging. It also trains surgery residents, ECC-specific interns, and rotating interns, and is equipped with 16-slice CT, dedicated soft tissue and orthopaedic theatres, a full endoscopy suite, digital radiography and ultrasonography, fluoroscopy, a fully stocked in-house laboratory, and an intensive care facility with 24/7 veterinary and nursing supervision.
