🕐 Schedule & Rota

1:4 weekend rota; no regular out-of-hours commitments.

About the Role

This is a permanent position offering genuine flexibility—choose full-time or part-time hours that suit you. Based primarily at the purpose-built Brindley Way Veterinary Hospital in Wakefield, with one operating day per week at the Castleford branch, you’ll enjoy a fixed day off and no regular out-of-hours commitments. This is surgical practice done right: challenging cases, excellent support, and time to breathe.

You’ll work within an RCVS-accredited hospital that’s invested heavily in modern facilities and talent. The highly skilled team of 18 vets includes multiple certificate holders, and you’ll report to the Surgical Director whilst taking ownership of your own caseload. Whether you’re mentoring junior vets, performing advanced orthopaedic work, or handling surgical referrals, you’ll have access to specialist expertise, continuing education, and the equipment that makes good outcomes possible.

This role is designed for an experienced surgical vet with a PgC or equivalent in surgery (or willingness to work towards one). Experience in orthopaedics is particularly valued. You’ll perform everything from routine operations to advanced procedures such as TPLO and patella luxation repair, with mentorship available where needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine and advanced surgical procedures, including TPLO and patella luxation repair, within your scope of practice
  • Manage surgical referrals and provide continuity of pre- and post-operative care
  • Collaborate with the Surgical Director and the veterinary team to deliver high-quality outcomes
  • Mentor junior veterinary surgeons and VetGDP trainees
  • Participate in a 1:4 weekend rota (shared surgical on-call)
  • Monitor post-operative recovery and provide clinical follow-up
  • Work alongside veterinary nurses and support staff to ensure efficient theatre operations
  • Engage in continuous professional development and stay current with surgical advancements

Requirements

  • Valid MRCVS registration and proven surgical experience
  • Postgraduate certificate (or equivalent) in surgery, or commitment to pursuing one
  • Orthopaedic experience—either established or keen to develop further
  • Strong communication skills; ability to explain complex surgical plans clearly to clients and teams
  • Excellent organisational and record-keeping abilities
  • Compassionate, professional approach to animal and client care
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team

Benefits

  • Salary: £60,000–£75,000 pro rata depending on certification and Advanced Practitioner status
  • Time Off: 6.6 weeks paid holiday (including bank holidays) and a guaranteed fixed day off each week
  • Professional Development: £1,750 CPD allowance plus 5 study days annually (rising to £2,500 for Advanced Practitioners)
  • Health & Wellbeing: Health Shield membership covering dentistry, physiotherapy, sports massage, and more
  • Transport & Relocation: Company car, free on-site parking, relocation assistance, and housing allowance
  • Professional Support: RCVS membership paid, two additional professional memberships, VDS cover, and CPD/training support
  • Family-Friendly: Enhanced maternity, paternity, adoption, shared parental leave, and surrogacy pay
  • Extras: Discounted veterinary fees, My Perks rewards programme (shopping, travel, entertainment discounts), Cycle to Work scheme, paid volunteer time, and company sick pay
  • Career Progression: Annual pay reviews, mentoring opportunities, and clear advancement pathways within VetPartners
  • Learning Access: VetPartners Learning Hub and access to specialists across the group
