Ready to make a real impact on herd health in a science-driven role? Join Genus ABS as a Health Assurance Vet and shape best-practice standards across a progressive cattle breeding operation.

🕐 Schedule & Rota

Some out-of-hours work required; flexibility to travel between Genus sites.

About the Role

This is a 12-month fixed-term contract covering maternity leave, with an ideal start date in March to allow for a thorough handover. Based in Ruthin, North Wales, you’ll travel between Genus ABS sites as needed, with some out-of-hours work involved. You’ll be joining a global agricultural biotechnology leader—part of FTSE 250 Genus PLC—where innovation and evidence-based decision-making are at the heart of everything the team does.

You’ll take on a hands-on role delivering veterinary care and health assurance across the Genetic Nucleus herd and Semen Collection Centres, working closely with livestock, production, and veterinary colleagues. This role suits a proactive vet who’s passionate about herd health, biosecurity, and continuous improvement in a science-driven environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver comprehensive veterinary care across the Genetic Nucleus herd and Semen Collection Centres, including prevention, diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of health conditions in calves, heifers, and bulls
  • Lead all aspects of calving—assisting deliveries and performing caesarean sections when required—and manage pregnant animals through the pre-calving period
  • Uphold gold-standard biosecurity and Health & Safety protocols across all sites, report any breaches, and support investigations
  • Ensure full compliance with UK/EU regulations for exports, SCC operations, routine testing, and certification; complete licensing and export documentation accurately and on time
  • Review and improve herd health protocols regularly, investigate root causes of health challenges, and implement evidence-based corrective actions
  • Research and evaluate new veterinary products, treatments, and preventative strategies to enhance health outcomes
  • Provide hands-on training to livestock staff on biosecurity, welfare, health protocols, and husbandry; mentor colleagues in calving management and animal health
  • Plan, organise, and complete statutory and internal health testing; maintain clear, accurate records to support audits and herd health planning
  • Build strong working relationships with APHA and DEFRA colleagues and maintain up-to-date knowledge of domestic and EU legislation affecting SCC operations

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc) or equivalent degree
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in large-animal veterinary practice
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Strong clinical capability across youngstock, herd health, reproductive management, and calving
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a wider team
  • Strong problem-solving skills with attention to detail
  • Basic computer competence (training can be provided)
  • Positive attitude, willingness to learn, and commitment to animal welfare and safety
  • Working knowledge of the industry and enthusiasm for continued learning

Benefits

  • Competitive salary (details on application)
  • 12-month fixed-term contract (Maternity Cover)
  • Opportunity to work within a global FTSE 250 company with presence in over 70 countries
  • Access to a progressive, science-driven environment with ongoing training and development
  • Culture of respect, openness, and fairness; DEI commitment across the organisation
  • Employee benefits as per Genus PLC policy (details available on enquiry)
