Full Time, Locum

Fixed-term maternity cover in a well-equipped Cambridge practice with no out-of-hours shifts and Saturdays only—plus the flexibility to shape your role around your interests, whether surgical, consultations, or a mix.

🕐 Schedule & Rota

No out-of-hours shifts or Sunday working. Includes 1 in 4 Saturdays.

About the Role

This is a 12-month fixed-term contract to cover maternity leave, starting March/April, in an established and modern small animal practice serving the Cambridge area. You’ll work full-time across 40 hours per week, including one in four Saturdays, with no night shifts or Sunday working—a genuinely rare opportunity in general practice. The practice is locally owned and has built a reputation for varied, interesting caseload work with a high proportion of insured clients, supported by visiting orthopaedic and cardiology specialists.

The role can be tailored to suit your interests and experience: whether you’d prefer a surgical bias, consultations only, or a balanced mix. Located in an excellent position for easy access to Cambridge and London via public transport and major roads (A14/A1), you’ll enjoy vibrant city amenities without the intensity of a purely urban practice.

While this role is initially fixed-term, there may be flexibility to transition to a permanent position if both you and the practice wish to continue the arrangement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver general small animal veterinary care across medicine, surgery, and diagnostics
  • Manage a varied caseload in a busy, well-supported practice environment
  • Collaborate with visiting orthopaedic and cardiology specialists to deliver enhanced patient care
  • Work as part of a supportive team within an established, modern facility
  • Adapt your role to focus on your clinical interests (surgical cases, consultation-based work, or a broad spectrum)

Requirements

  • Degree in Veterinary Medicine or equivalent qualification
  • Current RCVS registration
  • Ideally 2–3 years of clinical experience in small animal practice

Benefits

  • Salary up to £70,000 per annum, subject to experience
  • Generous paid holiday allowance
  • CPD allowance and certificate funding to support your professional development
  • Workplace pension scheme
  • Paid RCVS fees
  • Health care scheme and VDS cover
  • Enhanced parental leave
  • Staff discounts and rewards
  • Career development and employee welfare actively supported

About the Practice

This is a locally owned, well-established small animal practice with modern facilities and equipment. The team is known for creating a supportive, busy working environment and has invested in visiting specialist support (orthopaedics and cardiology) to enhance the range of cases and learning opportunities available to staff.
