Ready to launch your vet career with structured mentorship and hands-on emergency experience? This 12-month rotating internship at a leading referral hospital gives you breadth across Internal Medicine, Surgery, and Emergency & Critical Care—all with dedicated support.

🕐 Schedule & Rota

Active involvement in out-of-hours emergency care with supported primary case responsibility as part of the rotating internship structure.

About the Role

This is a 12-month structured rotating internship designed for recent graduates or vets transitioning from general practice who want comprehensive exposure to specialist disciplines. You’ll rotate through Internal Medicine/Cardiology, Surgery, Emergency and Critical Care, with the flexibility to choose additional elective rotations based on your interests. The programme balances hands-on clinical work with formal learning, building both confidence and competence across a diverse caseload in a multi-disciplinary referral environment.

Based at a busy emergency and referral hospital in Manchester, you’ll work as part of a supportive team where senior clinicians and specialists actively mentor interns through their cases. You’ll have primary case responsibility (with support) in out-of-hours emergency care, giving you real responsibility while maintaining the safety net of experienced colleagues nearby.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work alongside senior clinicians and specialists across all four rotation disciplines, actively participating in case management from presentation through discharge
  • Conduct clinical examinations, contribute to diagnostic planning, and develop treatment plans under expert supervision
  • Assist in surgical procedures and anaesthesia, gaining practical surgical experience across different specialisms
  • Take supported primary responsibility for emergency cases, learning to manage acute presentations with on-site backup
  • Collaborate with the multi-disciplinary team—vets, nurses, and support staff—to deliver comprehensive patient care
  • Engage in weekly seminars, journal clubs, and in-house teaching to consolidate learning
  • Participate in research opportunities and formal CPD activities throughout the year

Requirements

  • A veterinary degree recognised by the RCVS
  • RCVS registration or eligible to register
  • Eligible to work in the UK (visa sponsorship available for overseas applicants)
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills, with ability to work effectively in a fast-paced multi-disciplinary environment
  • Proactive, adaptable approach to learning with genuine enthusiasm for professional development
  • Resilience and flexibility to thrive in an emergency referral setting

Benefits

  • Salary: £32,000 per annum
  • Professional Registration: VDS and RCVS registration fees covered
  • Leave: 7 weeks annual leave, plus your birthday off
  • Learning & Development: Comprehensive induction with lectures and workshops; weekly seminars; access to RCVS Knowledge Library; £500 CPD allowance; Basic and Advanced Life Support training; VECCS (Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society) membership for one year
  • Mentorship: Dedicated clinical mentor plus RCVS Vet GDP mentor for new graduates
  • Clinical Experience: Active involvement in emergency and critical care with supported primary case responsibility
  • Diversity & Inclusion: Commitment to an inclusive workplace; reasonable adjustments considered
