Full Time
Dedicated OOH
Want to make a real difference in emergency care without working every weekend? Join Vets Now Nottingham for flexible, supported shifts where you'll always have experienced colleagues alongside you.

🕐 Schedule & Rota

Weekend shifts: 1-2 weekends every 4 weeks on a rotating pattern (Week 3: Saturday 12:00-19:00 and Sunday 08:00-18:00; Week 4: Saturday 16:00-02:00 and Sunday 16:00-02:00). Plus a share of bank holiday duties.

About the Role

You’ll be part of Vets Now Nottingham’s dedicated emergency and critical care team, providing out-of-hours veterinary care for dogs, cats, and small animals when they need it most. This role offers genuine flexibility—you’ll work one or two weekends every four weeks, plus a share of bank holidays, with a rotating shift pattern that gives you plenty of notice. The caseload is varied, mixing private and PDSA clients, and you’ll have the opportunity to mentor vet students, contribute to the Cutting Edge programme, and participate in the PDSA exchange scheme.

What makes this role different is the support structure. You’re never alone in clinic—the team always has at least two registered vet nurses on shift, and you’ll have access to experienced ECC clinicians for mentoring and guidance. Out-of-hours practice doesn’t mean all-hours chaos here.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide emergency and critical care assessment and treatment for small animals presenting out-of-hours
  • Manage a variable caseload with clinical decision-making supported by the wider team
  • Work collaboratively with registered vet nurses and colleagues to deliver high-quality care
  • Contribute to teaching and mentorship opportunities for vet students and trainees
  • Participate in the clinic’s educational programmes, including Cutting Edge and PDSA exchange initiatives
  • Maintain clinical standards and documentation in line with practice protocols

Requirements

  • Registered veterinary surgeon with a current RCVS licence
  • Emergency and critical care experience desirable but not essential
  • Willingness to develop ECC skills with support from experienced clinicians
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Flexible approach to shift work and scheduling

Benefits

  • Competitive salary: up to £45 per hour depending on experience
  • Seven weeks’ pro rata annual leave
  • Private medical insurance
  • Up to 50% discounted staff pet care
  • £1,500 CPD allowance plus 35 paid hours pro rata for professional development
  • Access to Vets Now’s AdvantEdge professional development programme
  • Dedicated central support teams (complaints and customer service) to reduce administrative burden
  • Mentoring and training pathways led by experienced ECC clinicians
