About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity to join Scott Mitchell Veterinary Care's equine team in Hexham, Northumberland. The practice is seeking an additional equine vet to work alongside a team of 5 equine vets, including 3 certificate holders and 1 RVN. You'll be based at their recently refurbished headquarters in this historic market town, frequently voted Rightmove's Happiest Place to Live in the UK.

Whether you're a new or recent graduate seeking full-time support from experienced colleagues, or an established vet exploring part-time work, there's flexibility here. The practice shares an out-of-hours rota (no more than 1 in 5), allowing you to balance clinical work with personal commitments.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive first opinion equine veterinary care to a diverse caseload ranging from pet ponies and donkeys to racing and internationally competing sports horses
• Support the practice's growing referral workload from neighbouring mixed practices
• Create your own blend of ambulatory and clinic-based work, with flexibility to follow cases through to completion
• Contribute to out-of-hours emergency cover on a shared rota basis
• Engage with the wider equine community, including racecourse and show attendance, consulting, and lecturing

Requirements

• Qualified veterinary surgeon (RCVS registered)
• Full or part-time availability considered
• Willingness to share out-of-hours cover (1 in 5 rota)
• Genuine commitment to client care, animal welfare, and team collaboration

About the Practice

Scott Mitchell Veterinary Care was established in 2001 as a proudly independent equine and small animal practice serving Northumberland and County Durham. The equine team operates from a recently refurbished clinic in Hexham featuring on-site stabling staffed 24 hours, treatment room, stocks, trotting and lunging areas, knockdown facilities, and theatre. The practice serves a truly mixed equine population and has expanded to accept referral cases from neighbouring mixed practices.

The practice is part of the XLVets community of independent member practices and operates a collaborative approach to professional development and clinical support.
