Saturday mornings only; no out-of-hours or overnight on-call requirements

About the Role

This is a full-time position based in Basingstoke with a Saturday morning rota and no out-of-hours commitments, though part-time applications are also welcomed. You’ll join three experienced veterinary surgeons, a skilled nursing team, and supportive reception staff in a long-standing practice with strong community roots dating back nearly 70 years. The team works collaboratively to deliver the best outcomes for patient care, and flexibility is genuinely built into how they operate—reduced working days, flexible hours, specific days off, morning or evening preferences—they’re open to discussing what works for you.

Basingstoke offers an excellent location with strong transport links: 45 minutes to Heathrow, one hour to the South Coast, and just 40 minutes by train to London. The surrounding area blends historic heritage with modern amenities, and you’re close to the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The practice even welcomes staff dogs to work.

The caseload is primarily small animal, though there’s scope to see exotics if that interests you. The team actively encourages medical and surgical development, with certificate and CPD support built into your role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide clinical care across small animal medicine and surgery
  • Conduct consultations in the practice’s two dedicated consult rooms
  • Perform surgical procedures in the on-site theatre
  • Work collaboratively with the nursing team and support staff to ensure best outcomes
  • Engage with the practice’s community of clients and their pets
  • Contribute to the practice’s ISFM accreditation and Silver Cat Friendly status
  • Explore special interests in exotics if desired, with team support

Requirements

  • Qualified veterinary surgeon registered with the RCVS
  • Medical or surgical bias preferred
  • A collaborative approach and willingness to work as part of a close-knit team
  • Interest in continuing professional development and case work progression

Benefits

  • Salary: Up to £75,000 depending on experience
  • Welcome Bonus: Up to £5,000
  • Relocation Support: Up to £5,000 relocation allowance and one month accommodation provided
  • Visa Sponsorship: Available for eligible candidates
  • Time Off: 6.6 weeks annual leave plus additional holiday entitlement for your birthday
  • Professional Development: £1,250 CPD allowance with 40 hours paid pro rata; certificate support; access to IVC Evidensia Academy learning; Vetlexicon online encyclopaedia; research funding opportunities available
  • Professional Memberships: BVA membership, VDS cover, and RCVS fees covered
  • Health & Wellbeing: Private medical insurance; enhanced family-friendly policies (maternity, paternity, adoption, shared parental, and surrogacy pay); Cycle to Work scheme; non-accidental injury support; employee wellbeing initiatives
  • Pension: 5% employee/3% employer contribution
  • Additional Perks: Pawsome Benefits reward gateway (discounts and cashback with 100s of retailers); discounted staff pet care; Care Fund worth £1,250 per annum to spend as you wish; Infection Prevention and Control Programme access; Quality Improvement Programme involvement

About the Practice

GP Vets was established in Basingstoke in 1946 and has been caring for local pets for nearly 70 years. The practice expanded to Tadley in the early 1970s and became GP Vets Ltd in 2012. Originally mixed animal, the practice returned to small animal-only focus in the 1990s and now operates as a modern, forward-thinking clinic with strong traditional values.

The practice is ISFM accredited and holds Silver Cat Friendly status. The Basingstoke branch operates from 65 Worting Road and is well equipped with digital X-ray, Idexx ProCyteOne and Catalyst analysers, a brand new ultrasound machine, dental radiography, separate cat and dog kennels, and a dedicated operations theatre. The team is part of IVC Evidensia, part of Mars Veterinary Health, giving access to wider learning and development resources.
